About the Department

The Directorate of Housing was carved out of the erstwhile Housing Directorate of the Government of Assam in 1972. Housing is one of the Basic requirement for Human survival besides food, clothing and water. In the State of Meghalaya the standard of living of the Rural people is poor, though the number of shelterless people is low, the quality of Housing in the Rural areas of Meghalaya indicates that the majority of Households live in Kuccha houses and a substantial proportion reside in semi pucca houses. Moreover, Houses in the Rural areas are of temporary nature which need to be up-graded with durable building materials. The improvement of the condition of the people also includes providing of decent houses. The main objectives of the Housing Department is to implement the Housing Schemes introduced by the Government of India and the State Government from time to time. The Housing Department is implementing the schemes out of plan fund allocation. At the Directorate level the function is to formulate policies at the State level on matters relating to Housing, other function is to draft Acts, Rules, laws, Bye-laws, etc. Read more about the Department
